Hurricane Dorian became the fifth Category 5 hurricane to form in the past years in the Atlantic following: Mathew in 2016, Irma in 2017, Maria in 2017, and Michael in 2017.
Hurricane Dorian began lashing parts of Florida after carving a slow path across the Atlantic Ocean that claimed seven lives and caused “catastrophic” damage to the Bahamas, including 60,000 people are expected to need drinking water in the coming days and weeks. On Grand Bahama islands and the Abaco islands, among the worst affected, more than 13,000 homes were severely damaged or destroyed – some 45 per cent of the total.

Hurricane Dorian is the most powerful storm to ever occur in the Atlantic east of Florida and north of the Caribbean, according to a report by the Washington Post. This is not necessarily surprising as climate scientists have been telling us for a decade or more that climate change will lead to more frequent, more powerful storms. They also say such storms will occur further north than usual.
