Green Steel: Steel is the world’s most important industrial material, with over 1.5 billion tonnes produced annually. Without steel, the world as we know it would not exist: From oil tankers to thumbtacks, from trucks to tin cans, from transmission towers to toasters. The bad news is that the process of steel manufacturing produces more carbon dioxide (CO2) than any other heavy industry mainly because the majority of steel production is based on coal-fired furnaces.
