A BOOK: NUCLEAR ENERGY – PEACEFUL WAYS TO SERVE HUMANITY

Dr. Mir F. Ali

Nuclear energy is the energy released from the core (nucleus) of an atom through either fission (splitting atoms) or fusion (combining atoms). Today, all commercial nuclear power relies on nuclear fission, typically splitting uranium-235 (U-235) Isotopes to heat water into steam and spin electricity-generating turbines.

The history of nuclear energy spans several key phases detailed by the World Nuclear Association:

  • Scientific Phase (1895–1945): This era laid the theoretical and experimental groundwork with major discoveries including X-rays (1895), natural radioactivity, isotopes, the neutron (1932), and finally uranium fission (1938) by German chemists Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann;
  • Military Phase (1939–1945): Driven by World War II, the U.S. Manhattan Project and parallel efforts developed \(U-235\) and plutonium-239 atomic weapons, culminating in the 1945 combat deployments and subsequent global Cold War nuclear stockpiles; and
  • Civil and Commercial Phase (Post-1945 to Present): Focus pivoted toward naval propulsion and peaceful electricity production. The world’s first nuclear-generated electricity came from the EBR-I experimental reactor in Idaho (1951) and the Obninsk plant in the Soviet Union (1954). This led to the global rollout of light-water reactors (PWR/BWR) and CANDU reactors, experiencing multiple waves of expansion driven by energy security and low-carbon goals.

A major component of Dr. Ali’s work is his book Nuclear Energy: Peaceful Ways to Serve Humanity. The website contains an extensive table of contents covering 78 chapters, addressing:

  • Nuclear Reactors;
  • Advanced Reactors;
  • SMRs (Small Modular Reactors);
  • Marine Propulsion;
  • Electricity and Heat;
  • Desalination;
  • Hydrogen Production;
  • Agriculture;
  • Nuclear Medicine;
  • Environmental Applications;
  • Water Resources;
  • Nuclear Safety;
  • Radioactive Waste;
  • Nuclear Security;
  • Cybersecurity; and
  • The Economics of Nuclear energy.

The work reflects Dr. Ali’s interest in examining nuclear technology not simply as an energy source, but also as a technology with applications in medicine, agriculture, water management, environmental protection, transportation and other areas of human development.
